If you’ve ever been to the mall around Christmas time, you know how popular stores like Bath & Body Works can be. While store-bought lotions and creams can contain a lot of questionable ingredients, our Homemade Peppermint Foot Cream contains only four natural and easy to pronounce ingredients!   I love that!

The Ingredients:

Shea Butter

Shea butter is a wonderfully moisturizing and healing butter from the nut of the shea tree.  It’s rich in vitamins A and E and boosts collagen production when applied to the skin.  That means less wrinkles, and more smooth, supple skin!

Virgin Coconut Oil

You’ll find coconut oil used in a lot of homemade skin products.   It’s an excellent moisturizer and is naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal.  You can read more about coconut oil here.  I love to use it in my homemade lip balm!

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet almond oil is another oil used a lot in homemade skin products.  It has a light texture and easily penetrates the skin.  It’s rich in vitamins A & E as well as fatty acids.  It also makes a wonderful makeup remover and I love using it in my Vanilla Chai Body Oil, Grapefruit & Sweet Orange Body Scrub and my Homemade Coconut Cocoa Lip Balm.  It’s one of my favorite oils for the skin.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Not only does peppermint smell wonderful, it adds additional benefits to your homemade foot cream.  Peppermint is naturally cooling and energizing to the body AND it is wonderful for relaxing muscles and relieving pain.

Peppermint is also useful in relieving headaches.  Simply rub a dab of the peppermint foot cream into your temples (being careful not to get it in your eyes.)

What you’ll need:

 Instructions:

  • In a double boiler or heat safe measuring cup in a pan of water, melt the shea butter and coconut oil.

  • Remove from the heat and add the sweet almond oil.   Allow the oils to cool to room temperature before adding the peppermint essential.

  • Stir in the peppermint essential oil and place mixture in the freezer for 15-20 minutes until the oils start to solidify.

  • Using  a handheld mixer, standing mixer, immersion blender or blender, mix  until it’s a creamy consistency.  It should only take a few minutes, if that.

  • Spoon your cream into your jars or tins.  Store in a cool, dark place, out of direct sunlight or in the refrigerator (if not using right away.)  Shelf life is at least 3-6 months.

 Storing Homemade Peppermint Foot Cream

Keep in mind, natural lotions and creams do not have the same shelf life as those full of preservatives.   Two of the ingredients in our Peppermint Foot Cream (coconut oil and peppermint essential oil) are naturally antimicrobial (they help destroy unwanted bacteria) and will extend the shelf life.

If you’re making a large batch, storing your Peppermint Foot Cream in the refrigerator will also extend the shelf life.  Even without refrigeration, your Peppermint Foot Cream should last at least 3-6 months.  Store in a cool place, out of direct sunlight.

Gifting Peppermint Foot Cream

You actually have many options for gifting Peppermint Cream.   Call it what you like:  foot cream, headache relief cream or stress relief cream.  Then, depending on the application, choose an appropriate jar or tin size.

I’d love to know what you came up with!

Happy gift-making, friends!

  • Reply Mindy E at What is the benefit of heating the shea and coconut oil? And freezing? Is it necessary for consistency purposes?
    • Reply Jen at Hi Mindy, The shea butter and coconut oil are melted to combine more evenly and yes, freezing is definitely needed to achieve the consistency you need. I've tried blending it without freezing it first and it just doesn't reach a creamy consistency.

  • Reply Laurie at I am planning on making this in a few days for Christmas gifts for family members. I was wondering if I could use cherry and almond essential oils instead of peppermint. I was thinking of mixing the oils, maybe not evenly, but to get the same amount of drops as you call for the peppermint. Any thoughts?
    • Reply Jen at Yes, you can substitute another essential oil for the peppermint in the same amount. The only thing I would caution against is using essential oils that may be irritating to the skin such as cinnamon bark or clove, for example or if you were making a lotion that would be used on the face or any area that can be exposed to the sun. In that case, I wouldn't use citrus oils or any other essential oils that might cause photosensitivity. I don't see any problem with the the cherry blossom or almond essential oils though.
      • Reply Laurie Sylvia at Thanks! I am so excited to make this.
  • Reply holly ellithorpe at I made a batch of 16 or so, it's been 20 minutes and not solidifying..does it take quite a bit longer since bigger batch?
    • Reply Jen at Yes, it definitely could take longer to solidify when you are making a larger batch.
  • Reply holly ellithorpe at I hink I left in freezer a bit too long, as it hardened a bit and is a little more on chunky then creamy side:( I was afraid to over mix it, as didn't know if it just get harder/thicker. Is there a way to get it creamy, or too late?
    • Reply Jen at I would let it thaw for an hour or so-- so it's not rock hard and try mixing it again. I think you're right, you don't want to overmix but I would worry more about over mixing if this had more liquid in it (like a lotion would). I think you should be able to salvage it! Good luck!
  • Reply holly ellithorpe at I actually put it in containers yesterday, but am not happy with it, so wondering if I can scoop out and mix again? Will that fluff/cream it up do you think, or make it thicker? If I do remix do I need to add anything to it?
    • Reply Jen at Yes, you can scoop it out and remix without adding any more ingredients.
  • Reply holly ellithorpe at Ok, it isn't as bad as I thought, but it is so oily...?
    • Reply Jen at This recipe is more oily than a lotion would be. The Rose Face and Body Cream on the blog is a creamier consistency and less oily. https://www.myhealthyhomemadelife.com/diy-rose-face-body-cream/
      • Reply holly ellithorpe at Ah, ok, thank you. Appreciate your replies. And it smells amazing!
        • Reply Jen at You're welcome! That's awesome!
